I said it on twitter, on facebook, to friends I met, to my mother in Portugal. And I need to say it here too. The Chilean documentary “Nostalgia for the Light”, which was released in 2010 but screened in Britain only this summer, is a masterpiece. It must be seen.
I love cinema and I watch a fair amount of movies. Many of them are good, or at least OK, and serve the purpose of entertainment. A few of them are very good and I will recommend to friends and maybe re-watch them again at home. A handful of them are exceptional and make me leave the movie theater thankful for the fact that cinema exists, thankful to the director and to all the people who made these movies and thankful to life in general for giving me the chance to appreciate them.
Nostalgia for the Light is in this last category.
I’m not going to review it or tell you about the story. My English and my writing skills wouldn’t allow me to do justice to its quality. I’ll leave you with the trailer and I hope it will instigate your curiosity…
In fact, I’ll leave also the trailers of 2 other movies that I watched in the last couple of years and that also inspired the same sort of fascination, admiration and “gratitude”: “Of Gods and Men” and “A Prophet”.
Here they are… (note of warning: A Prophet might be a little violent)
Nostalgia for the Light (Patricio Guzmán, 2010)
Of Gods and Men (Xavier Beauvois, 2010)
A Prophet (Jacques Audiard, 2009)
Have you watched any of these movies?
What movies have you seen and loved recently?

I haven’t really watched movies since my daughter was born. Hubby rents DVD from the library. He’s a movie buff while I tend to bury my head in a book. I watched the Vow recently and it was surprisingly good.

I’ll have a look at The Vow. I see it’s with Rachel McAdams, whom I really like.

I love movies as well and definitely watch a lot. I have not seen Nostalgia for the Light, so I will definitely have to check it out. Thanks for the recommendation. A couple of movies that I’ve seen somewhat recently and loved were “Incendies”, “A Separation”, and “The Intouchables”. The first two aren’t that ‘new’ and the last one came out not that long ago here in the states. :)

I loved A Separation too. Incendies and The Intouchables are definitely on my list. thanks xx

I watch a fair amount of movies but few leave me a lasting impression. Over the past few months I can count on the hand those that didn’t leave me empty headed after a viewing: “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier,Spy”, “The Angel’s Share” and in the more entertaining section “Midnight in Paris” (on DVD), “The Avengers”.
I long to see “Beasts of the souther wild” but it’s coming out next year and I have yet to watch The Dark Knight Rises.

I loved Midnight in Paris! In fact, I watched it while I was in Paris last summer precisely in the theatre that is in one of the first scenes of the movie! :) I liked Tinker, Tailor too, but I’ve to confess I need to rewatch it with subtitles as I couldn’t understand some of the dialogues. Very frustrating :(
Regarding the Avengers… all my friends as well as my husband, who is a comic book geek, loved it, but I didn’t get it. I’m not that much into super-heroes and I knew nothing about the characters. I wanted to love it, but I couldn’t :)
The Angel’s share and Beasts of the souther wild are going straight to my list. I think my husband will also love the latter as he’s fan of fantasy. Thanks for sharing!

Looks interesting, I’ll see where I can find it. My bf is very much into documentary films so he’ll be very interested in it….”Incendies” was very good like Theresa wrote. I think the last documentary that I watched and really connected with was “Marley” about Bob Marley, even though I was never a die-hard fan…

Yes, so many of you are talking about Incendies. I watched the trailer and it seems very, very promising.
I’ve heard very good reviews about the Bob Marley movie. Thanks for reminding me about it. I’ll see if it’s available here on netflix. thanks!

I haven’t seen any of these movies; they look very interesting so I’ll definitely try to hunt them down. Recently I caught Moonrise Kingdom and it was very sweet and charming. I also watched The Bourne Legacy and wished I didn’t – such a sad continuation of the Bourne franchise.
On a flight last month I watched The Intouchables, that was actually quite good although I was sceptical at first of the premise.

Moonrise Kingdom was definitely very charming. Probably Wes Anderson best movie after Royal Tenenbaums? (Although, I’ve to say I’ve a soft spot for the Fantastic Mr Fox – I loved that movie!)
Theresa above also mentioned the French movie The Intouchables. It’s got quite good reviews. I’ll try to find it here in the UK.

I haven’t watched a really exceptional movie for a long, long time. It would be good to find one again. The trailer of Nostalgia for the light is promising indeed. I will definitely check it out. Thanks for the tip, Sonia. xx
